How to use the RSS newsfeed?

SWX Europe provides an overview of changed website content (titles and relevant forks). The file, which is in XML format, can be subscribed to and read with suitable tools – so-called newsreaders.

RSS newsreaders are configurable: users are free to choose which sources to use and how often to access them. The newsreader reads the newsfeeds users have subscribed to and notifies them of new entries. A simple click on the specific headline opens up the article in the user's browser.

Another way to use newsfeeds is via web-based feed aggregators. Since the content provided via RSS is available in a standardised format, it is suitable for automated processing. This means, for example, that texts from a given website can be integrated into another website automatically. Compiling information in a standardised exchange format/object is called aggregation.

Technology

RSS is an abbreviation for two different things:

  • Really Simple Syndication
  • RDF Site Summary (RDF Resource Description Framework; RDF is a formal language for preparing metadata in the World Wide Web).

This ambiguity reflects the different standards that are available for RSS newsfeeds. Fortunately, current newsreaders are multilingual and usually understand all the standards. Using RSS is as easy as surfing the Net.

Newsreaders

There are various RSS newsreaders available. Here are some examples. The SIX Swiss Exchange assumes no liability as to the functionality and the correctness of the information.
